A light meter measures the amount of light. It exposes a photo by the middle gray. When you focus on something, and shutter your camera half way, you've chosen the middle gray. Then the camera measures out the shadows and lights based from the middle gray. One the first photo, I metered the computer screen as our middle gray leaving it normal. So when I take the photo, everything will become darker. When I meter the camera to Brittany's skin, making everything darker then the people, and making the screen really bright.
